I spent 30 years of my life yo-yo dieting, constantly stressing about what I ate and hating my body and I know I’m not alone.
In fact, the average woman spends about 30 years of her life dieting and 92% of women say they hate their bodies!
There were many mistakes I made over those three decades, like eating fat-free and low-fat products and switching to diet soda.
Mistakes that I now help my clients avoid because the nutritional quality of your food matters more than the calorie or point count!
Looking back, I now see three major mistakes I made:
Mistake 1: Believing that what I put in my body didn’t matter and focusing only on exercise.
I honestly thought that exercising more would compensate for all the junk food I ate. I used to practically starve myself all day so I could eat all my points at my favourite fast food restaurant!
My diet was so unhealthy that I had to have my gallbladder removed before I turned 30!
Mistake 2: Believing that eating healthy and exercising was all that mattered.
Once I finally realized that I needed to focus more on what I was putting into my body, I became obsessed with only eating healthy food. This has now been identified as a form of eating disorder called orthorexia.
I was weighing myself multiple times a day and exercising every chance I had. I wouldn’t allow myself to have an occasional treat, and drove myself and my family crazy!
Mistake 3: Caring about what I looked like more than how I felt.
Even though I was eating heathy food and people were telling me how good I looked, I felt like crap. I finally had to face the truth that I had pushed my body too far.
I thought that being skinny would magically solve all my problems and that I’d be happy. It was a huge slap in the face when I finally got to my goal weight and I was the most miserable I'd ever been!
What most people don’t realize is that your weight can be a lot like your height, meaning that your body has a comfort weight where you will look and feel your best and going too far below or above that weight is not healthy for you.
There are thousands of different plans and programs you can follow to lose weight. The problem is figuring out which one is right for you.
You may have even tried several different plans on your own, only to feel deprived and give up - or worse, reach your goal only to gain back the weight you lost.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation even did a study in 2015 that showed that 9 out of 10 people who lose weight by dieting regain what they lost (and sometimes more!) within 5 years.
I've been there many times myself, so I know exactly how it feels. And eventually plans that worked in the past just don’t work anymore.
We're bombarded with the message that losing weight is simply a matter of eating less and exercising more - and for some people that does work. For the rest of us, it’s a load of bull!
Because there's more to losing weight than diet and exercise.
And I eventually discovered that the safest, most effective way to lose weight (and keep it off) is to make the weight loss a side effect of the lifestyle choices you make.
There’s so much more I want to share with you and I'd love to teach you what I've learned over my 30-year battle with my weight and how I finally learned to live without dieting.
