Five Steps To Reach Your Wellness Goals

As a health coach, the three most common wellness goals that I hear are: lose weight, eat better and exercise more.

But, many people try fad diets and crazy exercise routines that they can’t stick with for the long-term. They don’t fully understand what it takes to make healthy living a lifestyle and what’s going to work for them.

While there are essential healthy habits you need, there are five other steps that I guide my clients through to help them reach and maintain their wellness goals.

Number 1: Release the past

Unless you’re using a past experience to learn from it, let it go. It won’t do you any good to continue replaying things over and over in your head. It just keeps you stuck because you’re focusing on the problems instead of the solutions.

Don’t beat yourself up. Just because you haven't succeeded at a goal in the past doesn’t mean you never will. It just means that the things you’ve already tried haven’t worked and you need to try something different.

Number 2: Evaluate your current situation

You need to know where you’re starting from whenever there is something you want to change. Trying something that worked for someone else will only work for you if your situation is similar to theirs, and even then it’s not guaranteed.

That same thinking also applies if you’re trying something that worked for you before, but your situation is different now than it was then. You also need to know what your priorities are as this can help when you need to make a choice between two or more options.

Number 3: Habit assessment

Almost 40% of our behaviour is done on auto-pilot – are those habits helping you reach your goals or hindering you?

Changing habits is often more difficult than we think it’s going to be and that’s why it’s a good idea to find support and accountability. It also depends on how you respond to external and internal expectations – something that I learned from the podcast “Happier” with Gretchen Rubin and her book, “Better Than Before”.

Number 4: Action

When it comes to transforming your health, you have to make sure that what you do aligns with what you say you want. If there’s one thing that I know for sure it’s that nothing will change by simply wishing for it while you’re stuffing your face and watching Netflix – at least it certainly didn’t work for me!

Many people wait for the motivation to take action, but motivation actually comes from taking action. This is true even for me because I know that if I don’t exercise first thing in the morning, it usually doesn’t happen that day.

Do I always feel like jumping out of bed and getting my workout done first thing in the morning – hell no! But, once I get up and get going I love the feeling that comes from knowing I’m doing something good for my body.

Number 5: Beliefs

Research shows that when people reach their goals, 85% of their success is attributed to attitude. Be careful of the stories you tell yourself because you can trick yourself into believing anything. What you believe matters.

Here are some examples of belief statements that I used to tell myself. Do any of these sound familiar?

-I’ll never be able to lose weight, what’s the use?

-I just don’t have time to exercise

-Eating healthy is expensive, I can’t afford that

Believing statements like those mean you will always find reasons (aka make excuses) as to why things won’t work when you’re trying to improve your health.

What you think matters more than anything else, because that is what will keep you going when things get hard – and to be honest, they probably will.

You will look for evidence that supports your beliefs, so believing that your choices don’t matter to your health will cause you to make choices that support that belief.

One myth that I’d like to shatter is that you can’t enjoy life by “being healthy”.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that it’s a lot easier to enjoy life when you don’t feel like crap all the time from the food you’re eating and not taking care of yourself.

You’ve only got one life, and one body so take good care of it.
