Our bodies send us signals all the time. When we go too long without eating, our tummy rumbles, we feel tired and sometimes even hangry (when you get so hungry that you're cranky).
When we’re nervous or worried about something, we often feel butterflies in our stomach. Some people even worry so much that they throw up!
Our bodies will also let us know when something is starting to go wrong. The problem is that symptoms often get overlooked, or brushed off as normal.
We take non-prescription remedies for nausea, heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea. Hmmm – why does that sound so familiar?
Got a headache? Pop a pill. Can’t sleep? Pop a pill. Can’t stay awake? Pop a pill.
These complaints are common – but they should not be considered normal.
I ignored symptoms like these for three decades, and that was exactly what I did. Popped a pill for everything. They’re easy enough to get. Just go to your local drugstore, maybe ask the pharmacist for a recommendation and leave with a bottle of pills that are supposed to help you feel better.
With all of the information available to us these days, we’ve lost touch with our instincts.
We have to figure out what our bodies really need, and there is no substitute for properly nourishing ourselves. You can’t supplement your way out of a bad diet.
Some people take better care of their cars than they do themselves.
We ignore our bodies until they begin to break down. Would you do that with your car, your house or anything else?
You can make your health a priority and enjoy life – they are not mutually exclusive.
I can tell you that I certainly wasn’t enjoying life when I was ignoring my health. My stomach would hurt so bad sometimes that I could hardly move. My energy was so low that I could barely make it through the day. I was even fighting sleep while driving home from work.
I was cranky and irritable with my hubby and kids in the evening. I would push myself to get done what needed to be done so I could get to bed. But when I tried to go to sleep I was wide awake.
I would spend most of the night tossing and turning, then have to get up in the morning and do it all over again. Most weekends I spent lying on the couch, feeling either too sick or too tired to do anything.
I didn’t know it then, but my hormones were really messed up. I had been abusing my body for years by chronic dieting and exercising to lose weight, but I was pushing my body too hard.
The biggest mistake I made was not listening to my body. I thought I was doing “everything right” but it was the wrong thing for me.
It wasn’t until I started listening to my body that I discovered what would actually work for me.
I only wish I had started listening earlier.
Chronic and degenerative diseases don’t just happen overnight. They can take 5, 10, 15 years or even longer to get to the point where you’re forced to make a change.
Why wait? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
It doesn’t have to take a lot of time or money to make better food choices, or to move your body more. But, there is more to being healthy than diet and exercise.
You have to believe that your choices will make a difference. I firmly believe that getting older doesn’t automatically have to mean getting sicker – no matter what runs in your family.
Research shows that our genes can be influenced by how well we take care of ourselves. Genes that promote disease can be turned on or off depending on the choices we make, especially when it comes to nutrition.
If you believe that your choices don’t matter, your behaviour will reflect that belief.
The good news is that you can start making better decisions today about how you nourish your body, and start feeling the healing power of whole food.
If you’re ready to start eating better so you can start feeling better, but don’t know where to start I would love to help you.
